INTRODUCTION TO SESSION 1:
Thank you for visiting. We know we'll give you lots of value in the coming sessions and pages. This is the first of our twelve sessions on starting your home based internet marketing business. While we cannot offer all of the details on how to start a home based business for the internet, we will give you the fundamentals of what you need to know to lead you in the right direction. We are going to break the components down into bite sized pieces, so as not to overwhelm you. Please be patient, the text may seem lengthy at times, however, that is the only way we can properly coach you on how to make your business work.  OUR GOAL FOR SESSION 1:By the end of this page, we'll have given you enough information to get online and publish your first page. HISTORY ABOUT THE AUTHOR - MONTY LOREE A little history about me, Monty Loree. My wife & I started our business in our basement unofficially in 1992 and officially in 1994 when we incorporated HomeGrown Advertising Inc. When you're talking about starting and growing a home based business, we've been there, done that! My wife and I started off with a dollar in our pockets and a 486-33 computer. We are self taught in all respects of business and internet. In the early days, we worked with conviction to learn our crafts. We did what ever was required, and sacrificed a huge amount to grow our business. Since 1999 we have sold over $4.3 million worth of advertising products and services. This makes me a quite confident in writing this session to help those people who are just starting off with their home based businesses. STARTING OFF WITH YOUR HOME BASED BUSINESS. I'm going to make the following assumptions for this page:
 LET'S START FROM THE VERY BEGINNING For this series, I thought it would be good to start right from the beginning. In doing so, I started to think back to the time when I created my first website, back in 1998-1999. I dabbled with some website development as early as but didn't really get started into commercial website development until 1999. (Up until around 1999, I couldn't find enough information about the internet to really get started. Things weren't that well developed in and around where I live.) If you're starting out now, there is a great deal more information on the internet about how to start and develop your internet business. So you're just thinking about starting a home based business. You like the idea of controlling your time and income and have some good ideas that you think will work well, and sell some products / services. WHERE IS YOUR STARTING POINT? This question is really going to be different for each individual. It really depends on the products you like selling, your level of expertise with computers, programming, and how much time you have. I can only make suggestions based on my personal experience. BUILD THE BUILDING The great thing about an internet home based business is that you can operate it out of the comfort of your own home. This is really a luxury as you don't have to travel to work, and can call your own hours etc. The challenge with the home based internet business is that you've got to first create the store, or place where people can come and see you and buy your product. I always compare a website to our local donut store. If you sold donuts and coffee but no place to sit and visit, you wouldn't get many visitors, especially when it's cold and snowy out! The department stores simply couldn't exist if their buildings weren't in place. You wouldn't 'walk into' a department store that had no exterior walls. That wouldn't happen. This is kind of a basic example, but it is the same for websites and marketing. You simply cannot market well unless you have a website of some sort to sell your product. Being the do-it-yourself type of person, I like to have my own websites to send traffic to so that I build up my businesses name brand and reputation.  HAVING YOUR OWN WEBSITE ADDS TO YOUR CREDIBILTY Credibility on the internet is a really important thing to sell. Often I see people marketing products on different forums and blogs who don't have their own websites. They send traffic directly to the vendors websites. The first question I ask relates to their businesses' longevity or credibility. I can't really determine how long they've been in business, or if they're going to stay in business. These people may have had their internet business for quite some time and intend to stay in business for the long term, but it's hard to know that if I can't see their own website. I must say that you CAN make money with out your own website on the internet, but if you look at successful online and offline businesses most of them own their own websites, buildings and equipment. In the early days I used programs like Microsoft's Front Page, but found myself getting bogged down with constantly editing out Front Page's formatting as I got more savvy with what I wanted. I decided early on that it was important to learn to program my own websites in HTML and later PHP. EditPlus is very powerful and has many features. One of the reasons I like EditPlus is that I can save my pages directly to my web host's servers directly from my desk top, and then view my pages instantly after they're saved. This is nice because I can immediately view how my edits affect my pages. STEP 2: GET A WEBSITE The next step is to purchase a website domain. The domain registrar that I recommend is Moniker Domain Registrar I have personally met one of the owners Monte Cahn at different trade shows and know that Moniker is a well respected and credible company. Not only do they do day to day website url sales and service, but they get into multimillion deals with high profile urls. STEP 3: WEBSITE HOSTING: A place for your website to live - Moniker Domain Registrar also hosts websites so that you don't have to search around for high quality & credible website hosts. NOW YOU CAN GET STARTED BUILDING YOUR OWN WEBSITE: Now that you've got url registration, url hosting, and page editing under control, you can start making pages. It's fun to start off by making a Hello World! web page. This is a web page that simply says, Hello World! Once you've got this new page written, published and viewable on your computer monitor, you know that you're successful in publishing your first web page. Programmers use this trick when they're first starting off programming to see if their program is actually working properly! I'm not going to into any detail as to how to build web pages. I'm just describing how I would start off building a web page these days as if it was my first time building a web page. WHAT'S NEXT? - THERE'S MUCH MORE!!
